After Maurice founded the California Republic, the precursor to the [[Pacific States]], he allegedly fled the nation after Skulli's political party, the Whig party, secured a majority in the House of Representatives, and it was clear he could not win a presidential election under his own political party, the Democratic Socialists of California. Maurice offered terms to rejoin the nation which were seen by citizens as establishing a "dictatorship," or "another mauriocracy, but more explicit this time."
