Political System

The political system of the German Democratic Republic is structured as a socialist democratic republic, where power is derived from the people. The GDR aims to establish a just and egalitarian society, with collective ownership of the means of production and a focus on the welfare of all citizens. It presents itself as an indivisible Republic that encompasses all German people, with an emphasis on preserving and protecting its unity and territorial integrity.

The legislative authority of the GDR lies solely with the Volkskammer, which is elected every four weeks by all citizens. The election process, overseen by the Staatsrat, strives to be fair, transparent, and inclusive. Representatives in the Volkskammer exercise their voting rights independently, without being bound by external orders or instructions.

The Staatsrat serves as the collective head of state, responsible for various important functions. Comprised of a minimum of three members, the Staatsrat is elected by the Volkskammer for a four-week term. It oversees the administration and leadership of the Armed Forces, grants amnesty and pardons, ratifies international treaties, and represents the GDR domestically and internationally. The Staatsrat has the authority to delegate powers to other entities while retaining the ability to reclaim them.

At the highest level of executive authority, the Ministerrat executes the laws passed by the Volkskammer. Led by the Prime Minister, who is elected by the Volkskammer and appointed by the Staatsrat, the Ministerrat establishes ministries and appoints ministers. The Prime Minister also has the authority to propose the dismissal of ministers, subject to approval by the Staatsrat. The Ministerrat has the power to delegate its authority to other entities, while maintaining the right to revoke such delegation.

Criticism

Critics of the GDR have referred to it as a Skulli Republic and claimed it was dictatorial due to the lack of opposition in the country.
